bubble-bobble-nes
Bubble Bobble - for NES

Bubble Bobble reached the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, brought over by Taito from its own arcade machine, and it remains one of the most charming games on the console. It tells the story of two boys, Bub and Bob, who venture into the mysterious cave of monsters to save their friends from an evil warlock and are magically turned into dinosaurs. The only way to transform back is to reach the end of the cave and rescue those friends, and the cheerful tune that follows you down there is one of the most recognizable pieces of music of the whole eight bit era.

Each level in Bubble Bobble is a single screen, and it is cleared by removing every enemy on it. Bub and Bob jump and collect fruit for points, but their real power is blowing bubbles. A bubble can be a platform to leap on or a trap for an enemy, and a trapped enemy has to be popped by jumping into it, at which point it turns to fruit. Power ups drift past inside bubbles too, including lightning that flies out horizontally and water that drags you and the monsters straight down. Take too long and Baron Von Blubba floats in to hunt you. A second player takes the other dinosaur, and playing together is how the cave gives up its true ending.

Bubble Bobble is the definition of easy to learn and hard to put down. It is a perfect game to hand to someone who does not play games, and a genuinely deep one for anybody who stays with it, because bubble placement becomes a skill of its own. The two player mode has probably started as many arguments as it has settled, which is half the fun. As a Taito landmark and one of the friendliest cartridges the NES ever had, Bubble Bobble is a collection staple.

Genre: Platformer

Players: 1-2

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1988

Developer: Taito

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
