california-games-genesis
California Games - for Genesis

California Games packs five sun soaked events into one cartridge and dares you to look good doing them. The Sega Genesis version arrived in 1991, developed by Novotrade International and published by Sega Enterprises, carrying over the loose, sunny spirit that made the game a favorite on home computers in the late eighties. Instead of stadiums and national squads, California Games went for boardwalks, beaches and dirt tracks, and that attitude is still exactly what sets it apart.

The five events are the half pipe, surfing, skating, BMX riding and foot bag. Each has its own feel: pumping for height and catching air on the half pipe, reading and carving a wave while surfing, rolling into stunts on skates, shredding dirt on the BMX, and keeping the foot bag off the ground with a partner. You can take on all five in sequence or practice a single event until the timing clicks, and California Games supports up to nine players taking turns, which turns the cartridge into a party game for a room full of people.

California Games is still loved for its easy charm. Every event is simple to start and difficult to master, the scoring rewards showing off rather than playing safe, and the surf and skate presentation puts you on the coast in seconds. Support for nine players makes it one of the most sociable cartridges on the Genesis, since a controller passed around the room is all the setup it needs. For collectors, California Games is a landmark of the alternative sports genre and a bright, friendly piece of early nineties attitude that belongs on any shelf.

Genre: Sports

Players: 1-9

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1991

Developer: Novotrade International

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
