castlevania-bloodlines-genesis
Castlevania - Bloodlines - for Genesis

Castlevania: Bloodlines is Konami's single entry in the series for the Sega Genesis, released in 1994, and it makes the most of the opportunity. Set in 1917, it follows two descendants drawn by fate into the family's long war as the vampiress Countess Bartley works to resurrect Dracula for one final reign of terror. Known in Europe as Castlevania: The New Generation, Bloodlines sets itself apart from its siblings by leaving Transylvania behind and carrying the hunt across Europe.

You choose between John Morris, a whip wielding vampire hunter in the Belmont tradition, and Eric Lecarde, a master lanceman whose longer reach and higher jump change how a stage is approached. The two play differently enough that a second run feels fresh. Six stages take you through ruins, factories and grand European landmarks, past zombies, mutants, giants and ghouls, with diabolical traps waiting in between. The classic secondary weapons return, including Holy Water, the Battle Axe, the Crystal Blade Boomerang and the Mirror of Truth, and each can be strengthened for a greater effect. Castlevania: Bloodlines is a solo game, with difficulty options for those who want a harder night.

Players still rank Castlevania: Bloodlines among the finest action platform games on the Genesis. The art is moody and detailed, the stage design is inventive, and the soundtrack by Michiru Yamane is one that fans single out to this day. It is also a slightly different flavor of Castlevania, more worldly and more mechanical, which keeps it interesting even for people who know the series inside out. For collectors it is essential: the only Castlevania on Sega's console and a cartridge that has never stopped being sought after.

Genre: Action Platformer

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1994

Developer: Konami

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
