crack-down-genesis
Crack Down - for Genesis

Crack Down is an action game that reached the Sega Genesis in 1990, converted by Hot B from the Sega arcade machine and published in North America by Sage's Creation. It puts you in the boots of Ben and Andy, a pair of agents sent into heavily defended compounds to bring them down from the inside before the clock runs out. Crack Down stands out for its clean overhead view and its insistence on speed: every level is a race, and standing still is as dangerous as the guards patrolling the corridors.

Each stage is a maze of rooms and passages with X marks scattered across the floor plan. Your job is to reach every mark, plant a bomb on it and get clear before the timer expires. The buildings bite back, so you carry a cannon, a machine gun and superbombs to clear a path. Walls block your line of sight as well as your route, which turns every run into a quick read of the map and a gamble on which way is least guarded. Two players can tackle the levels together, one as Ben and one as Andy, and that is where Crack Down is at its best.

Crack Down is remembered as one of those early Genesis releases that still plays briskly today. The timer keeps a session short, failure pushes you straight into another attempt, and the two player mode turns a tense mission into a shouting match about who is covering which corridor. For collectors it is a less common sight than the headline Sega titles of the same years, and a neat piece of the library's arcade conversion history. If you like action games that ask for planning as well as reflexes, Crack Down deserves a place in your collection.

Genre: Overhead Action Shooter

Players: 1-2

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1990

Developer: Hot-B

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
