darkman-nes
Darkman - for NES

Darkman is an action platform game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Painting by Numbers and published by Ocean Software in 1991, following the film released the year before. The setup is pure pulp tragedy. Once he had a normal life, a woman he loved and a brilliant medical career creating synthetic skin for accident victims. Then he became the victim himself, attacked by sadistic criminals, his face and body burned beyond recognition. Now Darkman walks the night, a man who looks like a monster, searching for the woman he loves, hoping to salvage his scorched flesh and take revenge on those who destroyed his life.

In play, Darkman moves through side scrolling city streets and rooftops, climbing and brawling his way past the gangs that fill them. Fists and fury do most of the work, bosses wait at the ends of stages, and the difficulty curve is typical of Ocean Software's console output of the period: firm, but fair once the patterns are learned. The short life of the synthetic skin runs under everything, which suits a character who is always running out of time. The cartridge is listed for one or two players, so a second person can take a turn when a run goes badly.

Darkman holds up as one of the moodier movie adaptations on the NES, dark in palette and tone where most licensed games of 1991 went bright and cheerful. Players come back to it for that atmosphere and for the satisfaction of finally clearing stages that once seemed impossible. Collectors have their own reasons: Ocean Software is a name more often found on home computer shelves than on Nintendo cartridges, Painting by Numbers was a short lived studio, and Darkman is one of the better remembered entries in the brief wave of horror tinged licenses on Nintendo's first console.

Genre: Action Platformer

Players: 1-2

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1991

Developer: Painting by Numbers

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
