decapattack-genesis
DEcapAttack - for Genesis

DecapAttack is a side scrolling action platformer for the Sega Genesis, developed by Vic Tokai and published by Sega of America in 1991. It stars Chuck D. Head, a bandaged creature assembled in Dr. Frank N. Stein's laboratory and sent out across the island continent of Eyeland, a landmass shaped like a body and crawling with ghouls, goblins and other creepy creations. Vic Tokai built the game from an earlier Japanese Mega Drive release, giving it a new monster cast on the way west. What sets DecapAttack apart is how cheerfully strange it is: the hero is beheaded from the start, he has a face in his chest, and his weapon is the spare head he hurls at everything in reach.

Play is single player platforming with a sense of mischief. Chuck throws his head to squelch pop eyed super slugs and the rest of Eyeland's residents, then picks it up and does it again. Skull heads can be punched for extra propulsion, poles send him boinging into the air, and collapsing log bridges, roving eyeballs and totem poles that try to bury you alive keep the footing uncertain. Stages run across Eyeland's body parts, each with its own hazards and horned beasts lashing their tongues, and items are tucked into the scenery for anyone who pokes around. At the end of it all waits Max D. Cap.

Players still love DecapAttack because it commits fully to its own joke. The art is bright and cartoonish rather than grim, the controls are quick, and the humor holds up decades later. It is one of those Genesis games many people remember seeing without ever owning, which makes DecapAttack a satisfying find for a shelf of early Sega platformers. Put it beside the better known mascot titles and DecapAttack still stands out, which is exactly why it belongs in a collection.

Genre: Platformer

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1991

Developer: Vic Tokai

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
