judge-dredd-genesis
Judge Dredd - for Genesis

Judge Dredd arrived on the Sega Genesis in 1995, developed by Probe Entertainment and published by Acclaim Entertainment. It casts you as the most feared lawman of Mega City One, the sprawling future metropolis of the 2000 AD comics, at a moment when the city lies in ruins and corruption runs through every level of it. The pitch is as blunt as the character himself: you are not above the law, you are the law. What makes Judge Dredd stand out on the Genesis is how completely it commits to that idea, handing you a Lawgiver and a city full of perps rather than asking you to play the quiet hero.

Play is action platforming with a great deal of firepower. The Lawgiver switches between ammunition types including heat seekers, ricochet rockets and incendiary missiles, so clearing a corridor of thugs becomes a question of choosing the right round for the job. Between the walking and the shooting there are high speed stretches aboard the Lawmaster motorcycle, where pacifying the most persistent perps means staying on the throttle. Boss encounters bring out heavyweight opposition such as Mean Machine and the ABC Robot. It is a single player game from start to finish.

Players keep coming back to Judge Dredd for its mood: grim architecture, heavy weapons and a lead character who never once smiles. Readers of the comics enjoy spotting the details, while Genesis collectors value it as one of the more ambitious comic book action games on the system and a good companion to the other Acclaim titles of that era. On a shelf of Genesis action games, Judge Dredd is the one that announces itself loudest, and it earns a place in any collection built around the console's licensed heavy hitters.

Genre: Action Platformer

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1995

Developer: Probe Entertainment

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
