life-force-nes
Life Force - for NES

Life Force is the 1987 Konami shooter for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Konami and known in Japan and in arcades as Salamander. The Bacterions have been beaten, but something worse has arrived: Zelos, a planet eating alien who intends to swallow your corner of the galaxy. This time you do not fly alone. Life Force stands out among NES shooters because a second starfighter can join you from the planet Latis, and because the journey eventually takes you inside the creature itself, through its guts, its death traps and its heart.

The shooting mixes horizontal and vertical stages, so the screen turns under you from level to level and your tactics have to turn with it. Power ups drop as you clear formations, and you spend them along a familiar bar for speed, missiles, the ripple laser, extra options and a force field, which means you build the ship you want rather than taking what you are given. Two players can fight side by side at the same time. Most players know Life Force for one more thing as well: the famous Konami button sequence that sends you in with a healthy stack of lives.

Life Force is still one of the easiest NES shooters to recommend. It is fast, it is fair once you learn it, the music is superb, and the biological stages look unlike anything else on the system. The cooperative mode makes it a genuine couch game instead of a solo endurance test. For collectors, Life Force is a cornerstone of the Konami shelf and a key piece of the Gradius family, and it is the kind of cartridge that gets played rather than just displayed.

Genre: Shoot 'em up

Players: 1-2

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1987

Developer: Konami

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
