millipede-nes
Millipede - for NES

This version of Millipede for the Nintendo Entertainment System has an unusual story behind it. Namco's Famicom take on Millipede began development on March 14, 1986 in the hands of Ed Logg, the programmer of the arcade game it is based on, and it was scrapped when Atari Games discovered that the rights to Atari's arcade titles from before 1984 belonged to the wholly separate Atari Corporation. A thought of retooling it into a new game with an outer space theme came to nothing. The build here was later compiled from the surviving source code, and it is completely different work from the Hal Laboratory version of Millipede that came to the Famicom in 1987 and the NES in 1988.

Millipede is arcade shooting at its purest. You hold a thin band of ground at the bottom of the screen while a long segmented millipede threads its way down through a field of mushrooms toward you. Shots split the creature into smaller pieces that scatter and quicken, and the field fills with insects that each change the job in front of you, planting mushrooms, nudging the screen about or dropping in to break your aim. DDT bombs sit among the mushrooms and clear a crowd when you shoot one at the right moment. Waves grow faster and busier, and a run is a steady negotiation between clearing the field and keeping an escape route open.

People love Millipede because the pressure never lets up and a good run is almost entirely about reading the board. This cartridge adds a layer that few games can offer: a chance to play something that was finished enough to run yet never reached stores, a small what if from 1986. For collectors with an interest in preservation and in the paths games almost took, this Millipede is a conversation piece as much as a game.

Genre: Arcade Shooter

Players: 1-4

Region: NTSC

Developer: Namco

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
