overlord-nes
Overlord - for NES

Overlord is a strategy game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Probe Software and published by Virgin Games in 1993. It drops you into a small universe of barren planets, each one an empty shell waiting to be given life, and hands you a single Starbase to build from. Overlord arrived late in the console's life and is one of the more ambitious strategy titles on the system, trading reflexes for planning and patience.

From that one Starbase you design ships, send them out and colonize the planets around you. Keeping a colony alive means thinking about the whole chain: farms to feed a growing population, taxes to raise the money that pays for everything, and a long list of equipment to build, from a spy satellite upward. While you are balancing all of that, a fiendish dictator is looking over the same universe with plans of his own, so every decision is also preparation for a confrontation that is certain to come. Overlord is a one player game, built around turns of quiet management broken by war.

Players still love Overlord for the feeling it gives of running something much larger than a single character, which is a rare thing on the Nintendo Entertainment System, where strategy at this scale was never common. It rewards foresight and punishes drift, and a long session can turn into a genuine campaign. For collectors, Overlord is a worthwhile find: a 1993 Virgin Games release in a genre the console is not famous for, and a good argument that the NES could do more than run and jump.

Genre: Strategy

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1993

Developer: Probe Software

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
