pulseman-genesis
Pulseman - for Genesis

Pulseman is an action platformer developed by Game Freak and published by Sega Enterprises for the Sega Genesis in 1994, made by the studio that would soon become known worldwide for Pokemon. The story is pure 1990s science fiction: a 21st century scientist, Doc Yoshimaya, fell in love with one of his own artificial intelligence creations and uploaded himself into his computer, where her program core merged with his DNA and produced Pulseman, half human and half digital. The scientist came back out of the machine twisted into the villainous Doc Waruyama, and Pulseman is the one who has to stop him.

Pulseman fights Waruyama's Galaxy Gang across seven inventive stages that move between the real world and the inside of computer systems. His gift is electricity: build up a charge by moving and he can launch himself with the Volteccer, a crackling dash that ricochets off surfaces and works as both a weapon and a way to travel at speed. Learning to hold a charge, aim a Volteccer and chain bounces through a room turns this single player adventure into something more fluid and more aggressive than a standard run and jump game.

Players treasure Pulseman for its colour, its speed and its sound, with a bright, chunky look and a soundtrack that shows off what the Genesis could do in the right hands. It is also a fascinating piece of history, a confident platformer from Game Freak just before the studio changed games forever, and the electric theme and the hero's design clearly came from the same imagination. Because it was never a mainstream hit, Pulseman has always been a game that players discover and then recommend, which is precisely what makes it such a satisfying cartridge to put on a Genesis shelf.

Genre: Action Platformer

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1994

Developer: Game Freak

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
