qix-nes
QIX - for NES

QIX is the Nintendo Entertainment System version of Taito's brain twisting arcade hit, brought to the console by Novotrade International and published by Taito in 1991. The arcade game looked like nothing else when it appeared, and the home version keeps that strangeness fully intact. Your adversary is the Qix itself, a whirling multicolored helix that drifts and snaps around an empty rectangle with no pattern you can ever quite pin down. There is no jumping in QIX and nothing to shoot. There is only drawing lines, and the nerve to decide how long a line you dare attempt before the Qix notices.

You guide a marker along the edges of the field and draw out into the open space to seal off areas. Claim enough of the field and the stage is finished. Drawing slowly is worth far more but leaves you exposed for longer, while drawing fast is safer and pays less, so every single line is a small bet. Stop partway and the danger comes travelling down the line behind you. The field has other defenses too: Sparx run along the borders hunting for your marker, and Spritz adds to the trouble, which means there is almost nowhere safe to pause and think. Two players can trade turns and argue over the scores.

QIX holds a devoted following because nothing else plays like it. It is abstract, tense and genuinely difficult, and slicing a huge area away from the Qix with one bold slow line is a particular kind of triumph that no other game offers. It is also a fine example of an early eighties arcade design translating cleanly to the NES, and a late Taito release like this one is easy to overlook when people talk about the system's library. For collectors of puzzle games, of Taito's output, or of the stranger corners of the NES catalogue, QIX belongs in the box.

Genre: Arcade Puzzler

Players: 1-2

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1991

Developer: Novotrade International

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
