rampage-nes
Rampage - for NES

Rampage arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed by Data East and published by Data East USA, and it is still one of the most purely destructive games on the system. This is the game where the nice guys do not get a look in. Three indescribably nasty characters, bearing a remarkable likeness to King Kong, Godzilla and the Wolf Man, are waiting for someone to send them on a rampage, and Rampage obliges with 150 days of destruction across 50 different cities.

Play is wonderfully direct. You choose your monster, climb the nearest tower block and pound it until the whole thing folds into rubble, and a day ends only when every building in the city is flat. You grab your way through Chicago, punch up New York and jump on San Francisco, while soldiers, tanks and helicopters do their best to talk you out of it. Food found inside apartments restores your energy, less appetising finds drain it, and a monster who runs out of strength shrinks back to human size. Two players can wreck the skyline side by side.

Players still love Rampage because it asks for nothing and gives back plenty: no maps to learn, no story to follow, just the slow comedy of taking a city apart one window at a time. The city by city structure suits five minutes or a whole evening, and the two player chaos has aged better than almost anything else of its era. For collectors, Rampage is a cornerstone of the Data East catalogue on the NES and a natural shelf mate for the other arcade conversions of the late eighties.

Genre: Arcade Action

Players: 1-2

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1988

Developer: Data East

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
