sagaia-genesis
Sagaia - for Genesis

Sagaia is a horizontal shooter from Taito, released for the Sega Genesis in 1990 as part of the long running Darius line of games. Its backstory stretches across centuries. Darius was a planet with a highly advanced civilization until Belser and his mysterious space aliens ground it into ruin, and two survivors, Proco and Tiat, fled to the planet Orga and started again. Generations later their descendants receive a strange radio signal, a May Day call from another line of Darius survivors, and Sagaia sends you out aboard the spacecraft Silver Hawk to reach what is left of them.

You fly the Silver Hawk through a branching sequence of zones, and the path you take shifts depending on where each stage leaves you, so a single run never shows you the whole journey. Power ups dropped by destroyed enemies build your shots, missiles and shield into something far sturdier than the ship you started with, which keeps you pushing forward instead of creeping along. The bosses are the series signature and the real draw: enormous mechanical sea creatures, each with patterns to learn and openings to find. Sagaia is a single player game, and its difficulty is the honest arcade sort, the kind you beat by learning it.

Players still love Sagaia for its atmosphere. Few shooters look or sound quite like it, and the branching routes give it more replay value than its length suggests, since a second run can take you somewhere you have never been. It is also a straightforward pleasure to pick up for ten minutes. For collectors, Sagaia is a fine representative of Taito on the Genesis and an easy recommendation for anyone building a shelf of 16 bit shooters.

Genre: Horizontal Shooter

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1990

Developer: Taito

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
