strider-genesis
Strider - for Genesis

Strider came to the Sega Genesis in 1990, a conversion of the arcade hit developed and published for the console by Sega Enterprises. You are Strider, a lone operative sent against the Master and the future empire he rules, armed with a laser sword and a grappling hook. What made Strider stand out in 1990 was scale and motion: eight megs of cartridge given over to oversized set pieces, and a hero who cartwheels, slides and climbs rather than simply walking and jumping. It looked and moved like nothing else on the machine at the time.

Your sword cuts a wide arc and your hook lets you cling to metal walls and ceilings and haul yourself up out of trouble. Strider keeps you moving: you hang glide into the citadel, slide under lasers, tumble past spikes and bombs, and hang off battleship bulkheads while the stage shifts underneath you. The opposition runs from soldier squads and winged robots to prehistoric monsters, boomerang throwing Amazons who chant to unsettle you, giant mechanical monkeys and centipedes, and snarling musclemen who want to wrestle at close range. Bosses turn up often and most of them fill the screen. It is a single player game and a demanding one, learned stage by stage.

Strider is remembered as one of the Genesis library's great showpieces, the cartridge you load when you want to show somebody what the console could do. The animation still reads as fluid, the stages still feel enormous, and the sword still has a satisfying sweep to it. For collectors the case is simple: a well regarded arcade conversion, a landmark action platformer, and a game whose reputation has only grown with time. The Master is still waiting, and Strider belongs on the shelf.

Genre: Action Platformer

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1990

Developer: Sega Enterprises

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
