vortex-snes
Vortex - for SNES

Vortex is a shooter for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by Argonaut Games and published by Electro Brain in 1994. Argonaut were the team behind the Super FX chip, and Vortex uses that hardware to put you inside a transforming war machine built from real polygons, moving through open three dimensional worlds rather than along a fixed path. The central idea is the morph. Your machine can become a powerful Walker, a sleek Sonic Jet, a speedy Landburner or a defensive Hard Shell, and knowing which form a given moment calls for is the whole game.

Each of the worlds in Vortex asks something different. Cryston is a snowpacked wasteland, Voltair a mysterious place of trapped asteroids, Thermis a scorching desert and Magmento a volcanic furnace. Inside them you enter vast mechanical caverns, dodge slamming doors, leap claw traps and closing arches, and slip past missile turrets, while mechanical crabs, centipedes, kamikaze alien pilots and enormous bosses do their best to reduce you to rubble. Your arsenal takes in lasers, rockets, cannons, heat seeking missiles and smart bombs, so most fights have more than one answer. It is a single player game, and it leans on exploration as much as shooting.

Vortex is remembered as one of the bolder technical experiments on the Super Nintendo. Players like it for the freedom: four forms make the same terrain feel different, and few games of the period let you switch between walking, flying and racing at will. It has a cult following among people who enjoy early polygon games for what they were reaching for rather than how smooth they look today. For collectors, Vortex belongs with the small handful of Super FX titles, and it is the sort of game that always starts a conversation when somebody spots it on a shelf.

Genre: Shooter

Players: 1

Region: NTSC

Release Year: 1994

Developer: Argonaut Games

Cartridge Only: No Box or Manual
Please note that this listing is for the game cartridge only.
