A Boy and His Blob - Trouble on Blobolonia - for NES

A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is a puzzle platformer developed by Imagineering for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990, and there is still nothing quite like it. A blob has come to Earth from the faraway planet Blobolonia, and the boy who finds him agrees to help get him home. What makes A Boy and His Blob stand out is the boy himself: he cannot jump and he cannot attack. Everything he manages to do, he does through his friend.

The boy carries a bag of jellybeans, and each flavor turns the blob into something different. He becomes a ladder, a bridge, a trampoline, an umbrella to slow a fall or shield the boy from falling objects, a bubble so the boy can swim and breathe underwater, a blowtorch for stubborn obstacles, even a bird so he can follow the boy anywhere. There are twelve shapes in all, and the world is open to wander with them: deep caverns where treasure is hidden, and then the journey on to Blobolonia. Progress in A Boy and His Blob means reading each gap and each ceiling and working out which bean solves it, and often in which order.

Players still love A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia for its warmth. The animation of the blob flowing from one shape into the next, the little whistle that calls him back, and the gentle strangeness of the whole thing make it feel handmade. It is a thinking game that never turns cruel, and it has aged better than many faster NES titles. The cartridge is a cornerstone of any collection built around clever design rather than high scores, and it remains one of the best games to put in front of someone who says they do not like old games.
