A Dinosaur's Tale is a 1994 Sega Genesis game based on the Spielberg animated movie We're Back, developed by Funcom Productions and published by Hi-Tech Expressions. Part of its charm is how it came to be: the game was built entirely from the film's preview trailer, which gives it a loose and inventive relationship with its source. A Dinosaur's Tale is also notable as one of the earliest Genesis games to feature 3D gameplay, arriving at a moment when the console was still being pushed in surprising new directions.

The game alternates between two very different styles. Every second stage is a scrolling platform level starring the human kids Cecilia or Louie, who move through obstacles toward the exit across New York settings that include a television studio and a circus that wants to keep the dinosaurs as an exhibit. The stages in between hand you one of the dinosaurs for a 3D sequence: skateboarding on the back of a pickup truck as Rex, or flying as Elsa over Central Park while collecting balloons. Dr. Screweyes waits at the end of it all, and A Dinosaur's Tale is played solo.

Players still enjoy A Dinosaur's Tale for its variety and its willingness to try something strange. The constant switch between flat platforming and early 3D keeps the pace moving, and the dinosaur stages have a rough charm that smoother later games lost. For collectors it is a genuinely interesting curiosity: a game tied to a film few remember, built from a trailer, and an early experiment in 3D on Sega's sixteen bit console. A Dinosaur's Tale makes a fine addition to any shelf of unusual Genesis history.
