Ace Combat Advance - for GBA

Ace Combat Advance brought Namco's flight combat series to a handheld for the first time, arriving on the Game Boy Advance in 2005. Developed by Human Soft and published by Namco Hometek, Ace Combat Advance puts you in the cockpit as the newest pilot in an elite fighter squadron, sent to destroy the Air Strike Force, the military arm of an evil multinational corporation. What makes it stand out is ambition: free roaming skies and a sense of speed that very few Game Boy Advance games even attempted.

Play is built around a run of missions that mix air to air dogfights with air to ground strikes. You fly over arctic, forest and desert environments, each filled with buildings and objects you can destroy, and each one open enough that you can circle, climb and choose your own approach instead of following a fixed line. Shoot down enough enemy planes and you unlock new aircraft, which gives every mission a second goal beyond the briefing. This is a game for one player, and the whole cartridge is tuned around learning the controls, reading the radar and flying with more confidence on each sortie.

Players keep coming back to Ace Combat Advance because it is a genuine curiosity: a serious attempt at a flight game on hardware that was never designed for one. It is demanding, it rewards patience, and the unlockable planes keep pulling you into one more mission. For collectors, Ace Combat Advance fills a specific gap on the shelf, a Namco flight title that sits apart from the rest of the Game Boy Advance library and from the console entries most people know. If you are building a handheld collection with real range rather than only the usual platformers and role playing games, Ace Combat Advance earns its slot.
