Adventure Island - for NES

Adventure Island is the platformer Hudson Soft released for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1986, and the start of a long running series. Princess Leilani has been kidnapped by the Evil Witch Doctor and taken to Adventure Island in the South Pacific, and Master Higgins lands there with no weapons and no food. The island is thick with tropical forest, mountains and caves, and everything useful is hidden somewhere in it: a skateboard, an axe, food and other helpful tools you have to explore to find.

Adventure Island runs on momentum and hunger. Higgins is always pressing forward, his vitality is always ticking down, and the fruit scattered through the jungle is the only thing keeping him going. One touch from the Witch Doctor's spiders, snakes, bats and demons is fatal unless you are carrying something that saves you, so the axes you throw and the skateboard you ride become precious. The skateboard is the heart of it: fast, slippery and unwilling to stop, it turns careful platforming into a nervous sprint. Traps are laid all the way to the final confrontation, and there are bonus caves and hidden routes for players who look.

Adventure Island is still loved for its clarity. It asks one thing, keep moving and keep eating, then makes that surprisingly hard. It is cheerful where it is cruel, with bright jungle colors and music people hum decades later, and the feeling of one long run across an island has kept it fresh. As the first of the series it is also the natural place to begin, and a collection with Adventure Island in it holds the root of everything Master Higgins did afterward. Few NES platformers are easier to recommend or harder to finish.
