Adventures of Lolo - for NES

Adventures of Lolo is a puzzle adventure for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by HAL Laboratory and published by HAL America in 1989. Prince Lolo of Gentryland was visiting Eden, a country of love and peace, enjoying pleasant days with Princess Lala, when Egger, the King of Darkness, spirited her away before his eyes. After a long and difficult journey Lolo arrives at the Castle of the Labyrinth, guarded by Egger's army of monsters. What makes Adventures of Lolo special is its honesty about what sort of hero you are playing: Lolo has no strength or agility, only courage and patience.

The castle is a series of single screen rooms, each one a self contained puzzle. Lolo must collect every heart in the room, which opens the treasure chest and the way onward, while the monsters stand in his path. Some of them only wake up once the hearts are gone and you are hurrying for the exit. Lolo's tools are pushing and thinking: shove blocks into place to block a line of fire, box in a monster, or build yourself a safe path. There is no timer and no rush, just one room at a time for one player, and the reward of seeing a solution click into place.

Adventures of Lolo endures because its puzzles are fair. Nothing is hidden, nothing depends on reflexes, and every room can be solved by looking at it long enough, which is why the game still reads as clever rather than dated. The bright, round art and gentle music make the hard thinking feel friendly. For collectors, Adventures of Lolo is a cornerstone of HAL Laboratory's NES work and the start of a beloved little trilogy, worth owning both for its own sake and for the way it quietly explains what a great puzzle game can be.
