Adventures of Tom Sawyer - for NES

Adventures of Tom Sawyer takes Mark Twain's famous boy and turns him into an NES platform hero. Developed by Winky Soft and published by SETA in 1989, it begins with Tom dozing off in school, and the whole adventure unfolds inside his dream. The hook that sets Adventures of Tom Sawyer apart from many platformers of its day is the two player option: play as Tom, or take the part of Huck Finn when a second player joins in.

Controls are kept simple, jumping and throwing rocks, and the game puts that small toolkit against a long parade of hazards. Rolling barrels come at you, pirates and mice press in, and at one point a giant octopus turns up. The route carries Tom down the Mississippi River, through forests, into haunted houses and even up into the sky, so the scenery keeps changing even though the moves never do. Enemies are persistent rather than clever, which makes Adventures of Tom Sawyer a game about timing and nerve: pick your moment, throw, keep moving.

The affection for Adventures of Tom Sawyer comes from its odd, dreamlike charm. A Twain story rebuilt as a late eighties platformer was never going to be a straight adaptation, and the result is a game full of strange sights held together by bright sprites and a cheerful soundtrack. It is also one of the lesser known names in the NES library, which gives it extra pull for collectors who enjoy licensed curiosities and SETA's catalog. Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a short, likable cartridge with a story behind it, and it looks good sitting next to the books.
