Aero the Acro-Bat - for Genesis

Aero the Acro-Bat is Sunsoft's circus flavored mascot platformer for the Sega Genesis, developed by Iguana Entertainment and released in 1993. The madman industrialist Edgar Ektor has seized control of the World of Amusement, and with a deranged cast of fairground freaks behind him he threatens the circus itself. The only hope for survival is Aero, a showman bat with a drill spin and no fear of heights. Aero the Acro-Bat stands apart from the era's many animal mascots because its setting does real work: nearly every stage is built from the fairground.

Play is action platforming with a stunt performer's toolkit. Aero power drills and twists straight through Ektor's wicked henchmen, tiptoes across terrifying tightropes, bungee jumps into battle and hangs on through the rises and plunges of a roaring roller coaster. Stages mix careful platforming with set pieces that lean into the circus theme, and the pace shifts often enough to keep things lively. Aero the Acro-Bat is a single player game, and it does not hold your hand: timing and nerve both matter, because the show must go on.

Aero the Acro-Bat has aged well. The spin attack feels great, the art is bright and strange, and the carnival idea still feels fresher than most of what chased Sonic in the early nineties. Players who missed it at the time are usually surprised by how solid it is. For collectors it is a key Sunsoft release and a cornerstone of the brief, crowded age of mascot platformers, which makes Aero the Acro-Bat an easy recommendation for anyone building out a Genesis action collection.
