Aerobiz Supersonic - for Genesis

Aerobiz Supersonic is an airline management simulation developed and published by Koei, released for the Sega Genesis in 1994. It opens at the beginning of the 21st century, with competition in the airline industry heating up and you installed as a young, ambitious CEO. The brief is easy to describe and hard to carry out: make sure your airline is a survivor and not just another casualty. What makes Aerobiz Supersonic stand out in the Genesis library is its subject. Very few cartridges on the system asked you to think like a boardroom instead of a gunner, and Koei brought the same patient, numbers minded design it was famous for in its strategy games.

Play turns on three linked decisions: where to fly, which planes to purchase and how to attract visitors to the cities you service. You fashion a fleet from more than 50 possible aircraft, organise routes to 89 global destinations and reinvest profits in new services including amusement parks, ski resorts and airport shuttle services. The everyday duties of a CEO are here too, from plane maintenance and advertising to the periodic emergencies that land on your desk, such as a plane crash or an employee strike. Aerobiz Supersonic also supports up to four players, each running a rival carrier, which turns a quiet game of ledgers into a long and genuinely tense contest over the same landing rights.

Players still love Aerobiz Supersonic because it respects their patience. Choices made in one decade pay off or haunt you in the next, and no two campaigns unfold the same way once human rivals start competing for the routes you wanted. It is the kind of game that quietly eats a whole weekend and leaves you planning the next one. For collectors, Aerobiz Supersonic is one of the most interesting strategy cartridges the Genesis received and a good reminder of how far the console reached beyond action and platforming. If your shelf has room for something thoughtful between the shooters, this one earns its place.
