After Burner II is a high speed jet combat game brought to the Sega Genesis in 1990, converted by Dempa Shimbunsha and published by Sega of America. It carries over the spirit of Sega's arcade hit, a game built entirely around velocity: you scream off the carrier deck with no time to think, caught in a swarm of enemy aircraft with more dead ahead. After Burner II was one of the showcase arcade conversions of the early Genesis years, and it still has that unmistakable Sega swagger, all horizon lines, sunlight and incoming metal.
You sit behind your fighter as the ground and sky rush past, machine guns blasting and radar locking onto frontal attackers so you can answer with missiles. Enemies appear as specks on the horizon and are in your face an instant later, launching missiles of their own that fly even faster. Survival means reading the screen quickly: dive, twist, throw the plane into a 360 roll as an enemy spins by close enough to touch wing tips, then hit the afterburner and close the gap. Stages run day and night, moving between dogfights and missile duels, and the pace never really lets up. It is a single player game and a short one by design, but the kind you replay for a better run rather than a longer one.
After Burner II still has a following because almost nothing else on the console feels this fast. There is no map to study and no inventory to manage, just reflexes, nerve and the growing confidence of a pilot who has learned where the missiles come from. For collectors, After Burner II is a cornerstone of the Genesis shooter shelf and a lovely demonstration of what Sega wanted its new console to be. Hand the controller to someone who has never played it and watch them flinch at the first wave.
