Air Buster - for Genesis

Air Buster is a shooter released for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed by Inter State and published by Kaneko, and known in arcades as Aero Blasters. This is not a little skirmish in the air. It is a full blown, take no prisoners war to the finish, with layered three dimensional looking backdrops and the kind of punchy sound work that made early Genesis shooters feel louder than they had any right to. Air Buster stands out for its sheer forward momentum and for one feature many of its rivals lacked: a second player who fights beside you rather than waiting for a turn.

The game scrolls both horizontally and vertically, pushing your fighter through narrow corridors, open skies and boss encounters that fill the screen. Weapon pickups change your firepower as you go, and keeping the right one alive through a difficult stretch becomes its own small drama. Simultaneous two player action is the heart of Air Buster, because surviving means covering different lanes, calling out threats and learning not to crowd each other when the screen fills up. Cunning, instinct and flight skills all matter here. Memorising the waves helps, but so does the willingness to abandon a safe position when the level starts scrolling somewhere new.

Players still love Air Buster for its honesty. It is fast, loud, difficult and completely readable, and a good run with a friend on the couch remains one of the better twenty minutes the Genesis can offer. Shooter collectors tend to hold onto it because it sits in that sweet spot between arcade intensity and home console fairness, and because the two player mode gives the cartridge a long life. If you are building a Genesis shooter shelf, Air Buster belongs on it near the front, within easy reach.
