Alien 3 - for NES

Alien 3, styled Alien³, was developed by Probe Software and published by LJN in 1993 for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and it follows the film it is named after. Ellen Ripley is in cryo sleep aboard the ship Sulaco when an alien or two turns out to have stowed away, and the wreckage of that journey leaves her crash landed on the prison colony planet Fiorina 161. There she and a crowd of unarmed prisoners have to survive until help arrives. Alien 3 stands out for how bleak it dares to be on NES hardware, trading bright platforming for dark corridors and the constant sense that something is already in the room.

Alien 3 is a single player side scrolling action game played across large, maze like levels. Each one gives you a job rather than a straight line: find the prisoners trapped somewhere in the complex, free all of them, then fight your way to the exit while the aliens keep coming. They attack from vents and ceilings, which makes the game as much about reading the layout and moving efficiently as it is about shooting. Ripley carries a decent arsenal, including a pulse rifle and a flamethrower, and ammunition is always worth conserving for the tighter corridors.

Alien 3 has aged into a favorite among players who like their NES library a little grim. The pressure, the empty hallways and the way the aliens swarm give it an atmosphere few other cartridges on the system even attempt, and clearing a level cleanly feels earned. For collectors it sits in a well known corner of the NES shelf: a late movie tie in from LJN, complete with that unmistakable rainbow logo, released when the console was already being replaced. Alien 3 is a conversation piece and a proper challenge at the same time.
