Alisia Dragoon - for Genesis

Alisia Dragoon is an action platformer developed and published by Game Arts for the Sega Genesis in 1992. It casts you as Alisia, a young woman who fights with lightning rather than steel, and the pace is intense from the first screen. Enemies come at her from everywhere and nowhere: hordes of crazed barbarians, mobs of poisonous centipedes and squadrons of winged gargoyles. Alisia Dragoon stands out for how striking it looks and how unusual its combat is, trading the sword swinging of its contemporaries for multi directional, auto targeting laser fire that crackles across the screen.

Holding the attack button builds Alisia's magic and releases it at whatever is nearest, so positioning matters more than aiming, and you learn to manage the power rather than hold it down forever. Alongside her own firepower, she recruits killer companions: the DragonFrye, the Ball O'Fire, the Thunder Raven and the Boomerang Lizard. Each one fights in its own way, hurling blistering boomerangs, fireballs and electrical attacks, and each has its own reserves, so switching between them at the right moment is the heart of the game. Levels are built to be explored as well as survived, with bosses that test whether you have been spending your magic wisely. It is a single player journey, hand to hand with evil as the box promised, and a demanding one.

Alisia Dragoon has grown into one of the most admired cult titles on the Genesis. People love it for its art, its soundtrack, its unconventional heroine and the satisfying novelty of a magic system that no other game copied. For collectors, Alisia Dragoon is a highlight of the Game Arts catalogue and exactly the sort of cartridge that makes a Genesis shelf interesting rather than predictable. Play it once and you will understand why it keeps turning up on lists of the console's hidden greats.
