American Gladiators - for Genesis

American Gladiators turns one of the loudest sports shows on television into a Sega Genesis cartridge. Imagitec Design built it and GameTek published it in 1993, at the height of the programme's run, and the aim was to put the whole spectacle in your hands: the padded armour, the crowd, the sprint to the finish. The show was often described as playing like a video game come to life, so a game of American Gladiators was a natural idea, and this version leans into the scale of it with six events drawn straight from the broadcast and a full roster of gladiators waiting to knock you down.

The six events are The Wall, The Joust, The Assault, Atlasphere, Powerball and The Eliminator, each given its own rules and its own way to end your run. Standing in your way are Nitro, Ice, Laser, Thunder, Gold, Turbo, Zap, Lace, Blaze and Gemini, there to block, chase and generally psyche you out of your game. American Gladiators also supports as many as eight competitors, so a living room full of people can work through the events together and argue about the results, which is where this sort of cartridge has always been at its best.

Players keep coming back to American Gladiators for the memory as much as the contest. If you grew up watching the show, hearing the event names again does a lot of work, and the events themselves are quick to learn and easy to pass around. Collectors value it as one of the more recognisable television licences on the Genesis, a sports game that is not football or basketball but something stranger. Put American Gladiators next to your other licensed cartridges and it gives the shelf a distinct flavour of early nineties Saturday evenings.
