Arcus Odyssey - for Genesis

Arcus Odyssey is an action role playing game for the Sega Genesis, developed by Wolf Team and published by Renovation Products in 1991. It takes place on the night of the thousand years full moon, as four warriors climb a narrow mountain pass to a ruined shrine to face the Dark Lords of Castomira and, at the end, the Dark Sorceress. Their task is to recover the Sword of Light, the weapon Princess Leaty once used to turn back the darkness a thousand years earlier. What sets Arcus Odyssey apart is its look and its pace: an angled overhead view, crowds of enemies, and combat that keeps moving.

You pick one of four heroes, and the choice shapes everything. Jedda the swordsman fights close in and wields fire magic, Erin the warrior maiden harnesses the wind, Diana the archer strikes from a distance and heals with rays of light, and Bead the magic stick fighter mimics the spells of the dark lords. Magic is gathered and spent as you go, and the angled view lets you see trouble arriving from several directions at once. Two players can take on Arcus Odyssey together at the same time, each handling a different warrior, which was rare for an adventure of this size.

Arcus Odyssey has quietly become one of those Genesis games that players recommend to each other. The artwork is lovely, the fantasy is played straight, and cooperative play gives it a social side most role playing games of the era lacked. It is also less common than the console's household names, so finding a copy feels like a small event. If your collection leans towards action and adventure on the Genesis, Arcus Odyssey is one of the cartridges that will surprise visitors who think they know the library.
