Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf - for Genesis

Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf is one of the Sega Genesis library's earliest sports titles, developed by Sega Enterprises and published by Sega of America in 1989. Carrying the name of one of golf's great figures, it set out to be a complete golf package rather than a quick arcade diversion, with practice, head to head play and a long international tournament all on one cartridge. Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf arrived when the Genesis was still new, and it gave the console something it needed: a patient, thoughtful game to sit alongside all the running and shooting.

You can tee off alone or play eighteen holes with a friend, and beyond the one and two player games there is a practice mode, match play for going head to head, and the full tournament. That tournament runs twelve rounds of eighteen holes each, most of them standard stroke play, with the seventh and eighth rounds switching to match games. Fifteen competitors are out there with you for the whole stretch. If a match game finishes level, Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf sends both players into a sudden death playoff, which is where the pressure really lands.

Golf games age well, and Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf is a good example of why: the swing, the wind, the choice of club and the slow read of a green are all still satisfying. A twelve round tournament is a real commitment, so this is a cartridge you return to over weeks rather than finish in an evening. Collectors like it for its place in the timeline, as one of the first sports games on the Genesis and an early example of a star's name on the box. It is a quiet, durable addition to any collection.
