Atomic Robo-Kid - for Genesis

Atomic Robo-Kid is a scrolling shooter for the Sega Genesis, developed by Micronics and published by Treco in 1990, following the arcade machine of the same name. You pilot the title character, a flying machine that is half human and half cyborg, through 28 levels that have to be cleared of everything that moves. The action runs horizontally, but the real signature is control: your unit can fly freely and then hold its position in space, so you are hovering and picking your spots rather than being dragged along by the screen.

That hovering changes how the whole game reads. Enemies arrive in tight patterns, and because you can stop, back off and wait, Atomic Robo-Kid becomes a shooter about reading a room instead of memorising a rail. Defeated enemies often release gems, and gems are the currency of upgrades: collect enough and your gun grows stronger or starts firing in more directions at once. With 28 stages to work through and one player at the controls, it is a long and demanding run.

Atomic Robo-Kid keeps its fans because it is tough in an honest way and because the hovering gives it a feel few other shooters of the era had. It is also an early Genesis release, from the first wave of the console's life, which gives it a certain historical weight. Treco's catalogue was small, so Atomic Robo-Kid tends to be a welcome find for collectors filling out the Genesis shooter shelf.
