Avalon Code - for NDS

Avalon Code is an action role playing game for the Nintendo DS, developed by Matrix Software and published by Marvelous Entertainment in 2009. It takes place in a world that is about to end. The player, cast as either a male or female avatar, is handed the Book of Prophecy, the volume from which the world will be remade. Avalon Code takes that premise literally, and that is what makes it stand out: everything in the world can be scanned and recorded into the book, and any entry can then be redefined by mixing and matching pieces of code.

Codes are Tetris like chunks that fit into the grid of space inside each book entry. Think of them as genes in a DNA sequence that you pick up and move with the stylus. Fold an elemental property such as fire into a weapon and you can melt ice. Strip codes out of an enemy and it grows weaker, easier to dispatch. Combat is built on light combos and charged special moves, and you can also begin a Judgment Link, a juggle that climbs higher with good timing and pays out HP, MP and Gem bonuses. Dungeons are unusual too, since each room is a timed challenge: hit all the switches, defeat all the enemies, land a set number of Judgment Links, or some combination of those goals. Avalon Code is a game for one player.

Players still love Avalon Code for the nerve of its central idea. Rewriting the world with a stylus rewards experiment, and the Book of Prophecy gives even small encounters a reason to linger. It belongs in a collection of Nintendo DS role playing games that reached for something strange rather than something safe, and it remains an easy recommendation for anyone curious about what those two screens could really do.
