Baseball Stars - for NES

Baseball Stars is SNK at the top of its game on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Released in 1989, this is the very first entry in SNK's popular series and also the most comprehensive one, since it handed players a level of control over their team that almost nothing else on the console offered. You do not simply pick a side in Baseball Stars, you create it, name it, dress it and pay for it. That ambition, wrapped around a bright and responsive game of baseball, is why it is still held up as one of the finest sports cartridges of its generation.

You can create, name, upgrade and manage your own team, customise its logo and colours, and raise the statistics of individual players by paying them more money out of the winnings from your games. Eight ready made gimmick teams are waiting if you would rather jump straight in, among them the American Dreams, the Lovely Ladies and the Ghastly Monsters. You can set up a custom league that keeps complete statistics on every player in it, so a season becomes a record rather than a run of single matches. Every game is played in the famous SNK Stadium, against the computer or a friend on the second controller.

Baseball Stars is loved because it understood something other baseball games missed: players want a team of their own. Watching a weak squad grow into a powerhouse over a season gives the game a pull that exhibition matches never have, and the play itself is quick and readable enough to keep up with the ambition. It is also an SNK cartridge with real character, from the gimmick teams to the crowd in the stadium. Any NES collection with a sports shelf should have Baseball Stars on it, and plenty of collectors rate it as the best baseball game on the system.
