Batman Forever - for Genesis

Batman Forever is a Sega Genesis beat 'em up developed by Probe Entertainment and published by Acclaim Entertainment in 1995. It arrived at the height of the mid 1990s appetite for digitised fighters, and its characters are built from photographed performers, which gives Batman Forever a heavier, more arcade flavoured look than the cartoon styled Batman games that came before it on the system. For players who remember Gotham City on the Genesis, this is the entry that trades platforming for punching.

You take the role of either Batman or Robin and work through the game's stages, with a move list that rewards learning rather than button mashing. Batman Forever also includes a separate fighting game mode, called training mode, which opens up the cast considerably: there you can play as Batman, as Robin, or as any of the enemies found throughout the game. That mode can be played against a computer controlled opponent, against a second player, or cooperatively with a friend against two computer opponents, which makes this one of the Genesis Batman games that works best with someone else in the room.

Players still enjoy Batman Forever for its two player options and for that unlockable roster in training mode, which turns the game into a scrappy little fighter long after the main story has been cleared. The digitised presentation has aged into something many people now find appealing in its own right, a snapshot of exactly what 1995 looked like. For collectors, Batman Forever completes the Genesis run of Batman titles and stands apart from the rest of it by genre, which is reason enough to want Batman Forever sitting alongside them.
