Batman Returns - for Genesis

Batman Returns is a 1992 Sega Genesis action platformer developed by Malibu Interactive and published by Sega of America. The Penguin has Gotham City gripped in his twisted flippers, and it falls to the Dark Knight to track his most feared enemies through intense danger. Batman Returns is remembered as one of the strongest showings the Caped Crusader had on Sega hardware, mixing wild acrobatic battle with a genuinely moody take on Gotham City, and it remains a favourite among Genesis action fans.

You attack the deranged Red Triangle Circus Gang using Batman's own weapons: swing on grappling hooks across collapsing rooftops, pitch deadly Batarangs, and waylay mobs of street thugs by hurling smoke bombs, wrist shields and swarms of bats from the Utility Belt. Driving stages put you in the Batmobile, raging down goon infested streets. Along the way you dodge Catwoman's slashing claws and swinging kick, duel with the homicidal Juggler, and fight murderous Gargoyles and machine gun toting clowns, before slogging through poisoned sewers to a heart stopping face off in the Penguin's lair.

Players keep returning to Batman Returns because the Utility Belt makes it feel like a proper Batman power fantasy: there is always another tool to reach for, and the fights have real snap to them. The Batmobile sections and the descent into the sewers give the game a sense of escalation that holds up beautifully. For collectors, Batman Returns is one of the most sought after entries in the Genesis line of Batman cartridges, a 1992 Sega published release that plays as well today as it reads on paper, and a natural centrepiece for a Gotham City shelf.
