Battle Chess - for NES

Battle Chess takes the quietest game on the shelf and turns it into a brawl. Developed by Beam Software and published for the Nintendo Entertainment System by Data East USA in 1990, it brings the much loved computer game of the same name to the console. The pitch has not changed since the box: chess is not a civilized pastime for civilized people, it is war, a ruthless battle where one warrior lives to fight again and the other is left on the field. In Battle Chess you do not simply imagine those fights. You hear the clank of armor and watch the pieces settle it.

Underneath the spectacle is a full game of chess by the standard rules, played out on a board drawn as a three dimensional battlefield. Move onto an occupied square and the two pieces act the capture out in animation, hero against hero, before the loser is cleared away. Play against the computer on your own, or sit a friend down for a two player match where every trade comes with a small performance. For a newcomer the animations are a friendly way to learn what each piece can do. For a stronger player they are a running joke that never quite wears thin.

Battle Chess is still a favorite because it gives an ancient game a sense of occasion, and because it is one of the few NES carts you can hand to someone who says they do not play video games. On a shelf of action and platform titles it stands out as the strategy game that doubles as a show, and Battle Chess holds its appeal for collectors as a notable Data East release and a console version of a computer classic.
