Battleship - for NES

Battleship hands you a fleet of six ships and a stretch of unfriendly water, then asks whether you can find the enemy before the enemy finds you. Developed and published by Mindscape for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1993, it is a console version of the classic naval guessing game, with fleets hidden on a grid, attacks plotted in secret and that held breath between calling a shot and hearing whether it landed. Battleship keeps the tension of the tabletop game and adds the noise and spectacle a television can give it.

You begin by placing your six vessels where you hope they will not be found, then start working the grid square by square, building a picture of where the other fleet must be. Hits, misses and near misses all tell you something. Ten special weapons widen the usual routine, among them depth charges, sonar and cruise missiles, so a turn can be spent hunting for a hull rather than simply firing at it. The cartridge is a single player campaign against a computer commander who wants the win as badly as you do, and because every layout is different, no two matches play out the same way.

Battleship endures because the idea at its heart is perfect and nothing about it has aged: a small grid, a hidden fleet and one decision to make every turn. It is the kind of game you can explain in a minute and come back to for years, and the special weapons give this NES version a character of its own. Battleship is a friendly pick for a collection of NES board game conversions and a good one to leave in the console when the mood is slower.
