Battletoads Double Dragon is a crossover beat 'em up for the Sega Genesis, developed by Rare and published by Tradewest in 1993. It puts two of the era's best known fighting teams into a single game: the Battletoads and the Lee brothers of Double Dragon. The setup is suitably over the top. A battlecruiser the size of a city, called the Colossus, smashes out of the moon with its laser cannon glowing, the dreaded Dark Queen and the shady Shadow Boss are aboard plotting an invasion, and with Earth's forces neutralized by glooming rays there is only one team left to answer.

You pick a fighter and go, with Billy and Jimmy Lee bringing their clean Double Dragon punches and throws alongside the toads and their oversized cartoon attacks. The stages mix straight brawling with the sort of variety the Battletoads games are known for, and the enemy roster draws from both worlds: Big Blag, Abobo, Robo Manus and Roper all turn up to be dealt with. Two players can team up, which is how most people remember Battletoads Double Dragon, and it stays tough enough that cooperating actually matters.

Battletoads Double Dragon is still loved because it works as a greatest hits of both series without ever feeling thin. The toads supply the absurd humour, the Dragons supply the crisp fighting, and the result is one of the better brawlers on the Genesis. It is also a game two people can sit down with decades later and understand within seconds. For collectors, a crossover between two famous names is always a highlight on the shelf, and Battletoads Double Dragon thoroughly earns its spot.
