Blaster Master - for NES

Blaster Master arrived on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, developed and published by Sunsoft, and it is still one of the most ambitious games that studio made for the console. The premise is pure comic book: you fall down a hidden manhole into a world of creatures terrifying enough to scare the rats away, and the only way out is to blast through a maze of tunnels in search of secret passages. In Japan the game was known as Metafight. The western version changed more than the title, because the plot was rewritten, some sprites were altered to fit the new story, and an intro was added.

Blaster Master is really two games braided together. Most of the time you pilot a tank through side scrolling caverns, gathering upgrades that let you climb walls, hover over gaps and reach places that were sealed off an hour earlier. When a passage is too narrow for the tank, you step out on foot and the view switches to an overhead perspective, where you aim in all directions and face the Masters of the Caverns: prehistoric bosses so large they fill the screen. Weapon power ups strengthen your shots, and a single hit can cost you them, so the game rewards patience over panic. It is built for one player.

What keeps Blaster Master alive is the feeling of one connected world that opens up as your arsenal grows, an idea that still feels modern decades later. Add a moody soundtrack and bosses that genuinely intimidated a generation of kids, and you have a cartridge that keeps coming back off the shelf. For collectors, Blaster Master is a defining Sunsoft title and a cornerstone of any shelf built around NES action games.
