Boulder Dash - for NES

Boulder Dash came to the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 from Data East, bringing one of the most imitated puzzle ideas in games to the console. Its hero is Rockford, a little digger with a simple job: tunnel through the caves, collect the gems and diamonds, and reach the exit within the time limit. The design first made its name on home computers in the 1980s, and what made Boulder Dash stand out then still stands out now. The earth you dig through obeys its own physics, so every tunnel you open changes what the cave will do to you next.

Dig a path under a boulder and it falls. Clear the wrong column and you are crushed or trapped by an avalanche of your own making. Dangerous creatures roam the caves alongside the threat of an underground explosion, and the hazards often turn out to be part of the solution rather than something to flee. Each cave is a small engineering problem with a clock attached, and the quota of gems is set just high enough that the safe route will not get you out. Boulder Dash also has room for a second player, so the controller can go round the room between attempts.

Boulder Dash endures because it is honest with you. Every death is something you did, and the answer was usually sitting there if you had looked one move further ahead. That mix of quick reactions and careful planning has kept players digging for decades, and few puzzle games have aged so gracefully. On the NES it is a tidy, demanding version of a true classic, and a Data East cartridge that earns its place in any collection built around puzzle games.
