Bubble and Squeak - for Genesis

Bubble and Squeak is a platform game for the Sega Genesis, developed by Fox Williams and published by Sunsoft in 1994. The evil Kat of Nine Tails has imprisoned the friendly blue creatures of planet Grool, and only Squeak got away, landing in a strange new world where he meets an even stranger kid named Bubble. Together they set out to return to Grool and gather enough gems and coins to send the sinister Kat running. Bubble and Squeak builds its whole design around that friendship: neither character can finish the journey alone, and the game never lets you forget it.

The pair work as a team under your control. Kick Squeak into a spinning frenzy to clear the obstacles in Bubble's path, let Squeak toss Bubble high above danger, and feed Squeak magic gumballs so Bubble can ride piggyback through trouble. Those moves are the key to everything the world throws at you, and the world throws plenty: alien caverns, snake infested swamplands and fire spewing dragons, each stage asking you to decide which of the two should lead. Gems and coins are scattered along the way, so exploring carefully pays as much as moving quickly.

Players remember Bubble and Squeak for its warmth and its cleverness. The cooperation between the two characters gives a familiar genre a genuine twist, the cartoon presentation is bright and friendly, and the pairing of a boy and a loyal blue creature is hard not to like. It is one of the less talked about platformers in the Genesis catalog, which is exactly why collectors enjoy finding it, and a Sunsoft cartridge always earns its space. Bubble and Squeak rounds out a Genesis collection with something a little different.
