Bucky O'Hare - for NES

Bucky O'Hare is Konami's 1992 action game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, built from the comic and cartoon adventures of the green furred rabbit captain. The crew of Bucky's ship, Dead Eye Duck, Blinky, Jenny the Aldeberan Cat and the earth boy genius Willy DuWitt, have been taken by the Toad Empire, and only Bucky can get them back. Konami gave Bucky O'Hare the care it gave its best work on the system: punchy music, colorful worlds and tight control, which is why the game is held in such high regard today.

Play is arcade action across eight levels, with four toad prisons hidden around the planetoid belt and worlds that run from a frozen ice planet to a burning star of lava. Bucky runs, jumps and shoots his way past Storm Toad Troopers and the war machines of the Toad Air Marshall. The clever part is the rescue: free a crew member and you can switch into their identity and use their own fighting skills, such as Jenny's Super Mind Blast or Willy's Laser Cannon. Choosing the right character for the right room is half the game.

Bucky O'Hare has a reputation as one of the tougher Konami platform shooters, and that is a large part of why players keep returning to it. Learning a level, working out which crew member suits it and finally clearing it feels earned, and the soundtrack stays with you long after. Bucky O'Hare was never a common sight on shelves, so it has become one of the more sought after Konami cartridges for the Nintendo Entertainment System, and a copy sitting in a collection says something about the collector.
