Cabal - for NES

Cabal is a 1990 Nintendo Entertainment System conversion of the well known arcade shooter, developed by Zippo Games and published by Milton Bradley. Your job is to sweep through the occupied territory of D.R.A.T., the Dreaded Republic of Allied Terrorists, and blast a path through twenty screens of resistance. What makes Cabal stand out is its point of view: you watch your soldier from behind as he runs along the foot of the screen, firing up into the scene ahead and tearing it apart as he goes.

You move your soldier left and right along the bottom of the screen while a crosshair picks out targets in the distance, so dodging and shooting become two halves of the same decision. You carry a powerful assault rifle and a supply of grenades, with extra firepower to collect along the way, and almost everything in the background can be shot to pieces, including the cover your enemies are hiding behind. Attacks arrive from land, sea and air, and Cabal has room for two players who want to share the campaign.

Cabal still plays beautifully because its appeal is immediate: one more screen, one more wall brought down, one more close escape. It rewards quick hands and accuracy without asking you to memorize anything, which is why it remains a favorite for short sessions and for handing a controller to someone new. As a home version of an arcade favorite, Cabal is a natural piece of any Nintendo Entertainment System shooter collection, and the Milton Bradley label makes it a slightly unusual one to come across.
