Casino Kid is a casino game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed and published by Sofel in 1989. It is set in the fictional town of Lost Wages, a pun on the real Las Vegas, Nevada, and it casts you as a young gambler whose job is to earn a great deal of money and bring down the evil King of the Casino. In Japan the game appeared as 100 Man Dollar Kid: Maboroshi no Teiou Hen. What makes Casino Kid stand out in the NES library is the decision to wrap card play inside a story, giving the tables a purpose and the player a villain to work toward.
Casino Kid is a game for one player, and it splits your time between the casino floor and the seats at the tables. You move around the casino looking for rival gamblers, then sit down to face them at blackjack or five card draw poker, with your bankroll carrying over from one match to the next. Win and you climb toward tougher opposition; lose your money and the run is over. The Japanese version also let you fly out to casinos in places such as New York City and Japan for a substantial airfare, a difference that collectors enjoy comparing with the version released in North America.
Players keep coming back to Casino Kid because it treats cards as a journey rather than a menu of tables. Reading an opponent, nursing a bankroll and knowing when to leave a seat give it a tension that plain card simulations rarely manage, and the simple NES presentation has aged into real charm. For collectors, Casino Kid is one of the more unusual concepts the console ever carried, a gambling game with a plot and a boss, and it looks right on a shelf next to its sequel. If you like card play with a bit of mischief behind it, Casino Kid earns its place.
