Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia came from Konami in 2008, arriving after the success of Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin on Nintendo DS. You play as Shanoa, a member of Ecclesia, an organization that has sworn to defeat the evil forces of Dracula. Order of Ecclesia stands apart from its DS predecessors in shape: rather than a single castle, it spreads across 20 explorable areas linked by a world map, and it is the toughest and most serious in tone of the three.
The heart of it is the Glyph system. Shanoa absorbs glyphs from enemies and from the world, assigns them to each arm and to her back, and those pairings produce more than 100 combinations, from sword swings and axes to magic and summoned help. Combat is intense side scrolling action, and because glyphs draw on your magic you are always balancing attack against recovery. Between fights you can rescue villagers, which opens up shops and requests, and the areas themselves vary widely before the castle finally opens its gates.
Players love Order of Ecclesia for the challenge. Bosses hit hard, the glyph combinations reward experimentation, and the whole game has the confidence of a team working at the top of its form. It is also one of the best looking titles on the system, with hand drawn detail in every area. As the last of Konami's trio of Nintendo DS Castlevania games, Order of Ecclesia is a fitting finish and a cartridge that collectors tend to hold onto.
