Championship Bowling - for Genesis

Championship Bowling brings the lanes to the Sega Genesis. Developed by Soft Machine and published by Mentrix Software in 1993, it is a focused sports game built on one simple pleasure: rolling a heavy ball down a polished lane and watching ten pins scatter. What sets Championship Bowling apart is its presentation. The graphics work to recreate the feeling of a real bowling alley, right down to the hilarious reactions that greet your shots, whether you strike or leave a messy split.

Before you step to the line, Championship Bowling lets you choose your character and pick a ball weight that suits your style, then decide between a regular game and a special game for a change of pace. After that it comes down to timing and nerve: line up, judge the release, and live with the result. The game supports one to four players, so an evening can be a quiet solo session or a full house taking turns on the same couch, which is where it is at its loudest and best.

Players keep coming back to Championship Bowling because it is easy to learn and hard to stop playing. There is no long campaign to commit to and nothing to study: pick up a controller, choose a bowler, and start throwing. For collectors it fills a particular gap, since Genesis shelves tend to run heavy on football and hockey, and a dedicated bowling game from 1993 is a welcome oddity beside them. If you like sports games that come alive with a room full of people, Championship Bowling belongs in your collection.
