Championship Pool is a game of angles and patience for the Sega Genesis. Bitmasters developed it and Mindscape published it in 1993, at a time when pool was more often a bar pastime than a video game subject. What makes Championship Pool stand out is how seriously it treats the table. Shots are lined up with care, the balls roll and collide the way you hope they will, and the tournament structure gives every frame something to lose.
You can play 8 ball or 9 ball, and the main draw is the tournament road. Championship Pool starts you at the BCA Regional Championship, where 32 opponents stand between you and the trophy. Each match is a race to four games, and a single loss ends your run, so there is no coasting through the early rounds. Win it all and the World Championship is waiting. Away from the tournament, up to eight players can take turns at the table, which turns one cartridge into a long night of friendly needle.
Championship Pool has aged well because pool itself does not go out of date. The rules are the rules, the skill is in reading the table, and a good shot feels as satisfying now as it did in 1993. It is also a patient, quiet game in a library full of noisy ones, which makes it a fine change of pace. Collectors value Championship Pool as one of the better cue sports games on the Genesis, and its elimination format gives it more staying power than a simple exhibition mode ever could.
