Championship Pool brings the pool hall to the Nintendo Entertainment System in a clean, no nonsense package. Developed by Bitmasters and published by Mindscape in 1993, it arrived late in the console's life and made the most of its hardware, offering a wide spread of rule sets rather than a single table game. What sets Championship Pool apart is its sheer breadth: nine ways to play, from eight ball and nine ball to three ball, ten ball, fifteen ball, straight pool (14.1 continuous), rotation, equal offense and speed pool.
Play is built around lining up the cue, choosing your power and letting the physics do the rest, with the table laid out clearly enough that long shots feel fair. Tournament mode sets a single player against a run of computer opponents. Party Pool opens the table to as many as eight people taking turns on one console, which is unusual for the system and still the fastest way to fill a room. Freestyle lets players make up their own rules and simply shoot, while Challenge drills individual shots for anyone who wants to sharpen up before a match.
Players keep coming back to Championship Pool because it is honest about what it is: a patient, friendly sports game that rewards a steady hand and a little geometry. It works just as well for a quiet solo tournament as for a long night of passing the controller around. For collectors, it is a notable entry in the small group of NES sports titles that went deep on rules instead of flash, and a cartridge that earns its place next to the better known arcade conversions on the shelf.
