Chubby Cherub - for NES

Chubby Cherub is a side scrolling flier for the Nintendo Entertainment System, developed by TOSE and published by Bandai in 1985. You guide a small, well meaning angel whose good deeds keep landing him in trouble: he is bitten by dogs, pecked at by birds, pelted with firecrackers and covered head to toe in puffs of smoke, all because he wants to help people and get something to eat. Its history is unusual too. The game began in Japan starring a ghost from a Fujiko Fujio manga series, and it was retitled and heavily modified for its North American release because the source material was not familiar to Western players.

Chubby Cherub flies by flapping, and keeping him in the air means keeping him fed, so chomping food is as much a part of the game as moving forward. Snacks top your energy up, hazards wear it down, and each stretch asks you to read the pattern of animals and obstacles rather than meet them head on. The aims are simple and warm: perform your good deeds, rescue your friend and make the day a cheerful one. There is a two player option as well, so a friend can take a turn with the little cherub.

Players keep a soft spot for Chubby Cherub because it is sweet and strange in a way few early Nintendo games are, with a gentle look, a jolly tune and a difficulty that keeps veterans honest. Fans later produced a full English translation of the Japanese version, which makes the two sides of this odd little game easy to appreciate together. Collectors value it as an early Bandai release and as a window into how Japanese characters were reshaped for American shelves.
